Troubleshooting your custom domain

What to check when your custom domain is not connecting or your ClubRight Website is not going live.

This article is about your ClubRight Website, your public site for attracting new members.

If you have connected a custom domain but your site is not live yet, it is almost always down to the DNS records at your domain provider, and it usually resolves with a little time. This article covers what to check.

I can't find the DNS records to add

The TXT and CNAME records only appear once you've saved your domain. To see them:

  1. Go to Settings > Your web presence > Public Website and open the Web address tab.

  2. In the Custom domain box, type your domain, for example www.yourclub.co.uk.

  3. Click Save domain.

The records then appear on the same tab, ready to copy across to your domain provider. For the full setup, see Connecting your custom domain.

First, give it time

DNS changes do not take effect instantly. After you add your records, they can take up to an hour to propagate, and occasionally longer. ClubRight checks for your records every 30 minutes in the background, so you do not need to keep the page open. To check straight away, click Check now on the Web address tab.

Check the status message

The Web address tab shows a message that tells you how far along the setup is:

  • Waiting for your DNS records. ClubRight can't see your records yet. Go to the next section.

  • DNS records detected. Your records are in and ClubRight is issuing your HTTPS certificate. This usually takes 2 to 10 minutes, so give it a little more time.

  • Your site is live! Visitors typing your domain reach your site.

If you see Getting your domain ready., you don't need to do anything. ClubRight carries on with the setup automatically.

My domain setup says Paused

Your DNS records need adding within 7 days of starting the setup. If ClubRight can't see them by then, the setup pauses and the Web address tab shows Paused. To start again:

  1. Go to Settings > Your web presence > Public Website and open the Web address tab.

  2. Click Get a new code.

  3. Check the records now shown against the ones at your domain provider. If any value has changed, for example the TXT record, update it so it matches exactly.

ClubRight then starts checking for your records again. Add them straight away so the setup doesn't pause a second time.

If your DNS records are not being detected

Work through these checks at your domain provider:

  1. Check the records match exactly. Compare the TXT and CNAME records you added against the ones shown on the Web address tab. Even a small difference stops detection. Copy them across exactly, with no extra spaces.

  2. Check the record names and values. The CNAME record is usually named www and always points to public.clubright.co.uk. Use the name and value for the TXT record exactly as the Web address tab shows them.

  3. Check the Cloudflare proxy is off. If your domain is with Cloudflare, the CNAME record must be set to DNS only (grey cloud). With the proxy on (orange cloud), ClubRight can't verify your domain or issue the HTTPS certificate.

  4. Check you added them to the right domain. If you manage several domains at your provider, make sure the records are on the domain you entered in ClubRight.

  5. Wait and check again. If everything looks right, the records may simply not have propagated yet. Click Check now after a while.

💡 Visitors reach one version but not the other? If your site loads at www.yourclub.co.uk but not yourclub.co.uk (or the other way round), set up Domain Forwarding at your provider so one forwards to the other, choosing Permanent (301) if asked. See Connecting your custom domain for detail.

If you have worked through these and your domain still will not connect, contact the Customer Success team using the chat button in your application, and let them know the domain you are connecting.
