When a membership payment fails (you may hear it called bounced), whether it is tried again automatically depends on which payment provider collects it. This article explains how retries work for each provider, how many times a payment is tried, and when retries stop.
ClubRight Pay Direct Debit
ClubRight Pay Direct Debit retries failed payments automatically, as part of the standard service. Each club has its own retry setting: 3 retries (recommended), 2, 1, or no retries.
Total attempts are your retry setting plus one. That's the original collection plus each retry, so with 3 retries a payment is tried up to 4 times in total.
Each retry is made 5 working days after the previous failure. Weekends don't count, so a payment that fails on Tuesday 22nd is retried on Monday 28th.
A retry only happens while the member still owes the whole amount that failed. If they've since paid some or all of it another way, such as at the till, it isn't retried.
A retry that's still in progress doesn't count towards the limit. It only counts once it has a result.
A successful payment resets the count, so a later failure starts again from the beginning.
Each retry appears as a new, separate payment on the member's schedule. The original payment stays as Failed.
You can see your club's retry setting under Settings > ClubRight Pay, in the Direct Debit section, as Failed-payment retries. You can't change this yourself. To change it, contact our Customer Success team.
A member with a failed payment still counts as overdue while a retry is waiting. See What do the payment statuses mean? for how overdue works.
To cancel a retry and take payment another way, see "Can I stop a reattempt and take payment another way?" in Why has a member's Direct Debit failed?
GoCardless
One-off payments are never retried.
Regular (subscription) payments can only be retried if your club has Success+ turned on in its GoCardless account. Retries are then run entirely by GoCardless, not by ClubRight.
GoCardless decides when to retry, using its own data to pick the day a payment is most likely to succeed. It only retries payments that failed for insufficient funds.
By default, Success+ retries up to 3 times within 4 weeks. You can change the number of retries and the retry period in your GoCardless dashboard, under Success+.
There is no retry setting for GoCardless inside ClubRight.
Without Success+, a failed GoCardless payment isn't tried again automatically. Collect it another way or follow up with the member.
đĄ Want retries without managing them in another system? With ClubRight Pay Direct Debit, automatic retries are included as standard, and we can set how many to suit your club. See ClubRight Pay Direct Debit explained.
Card (ClubRight Pay Card and Stripe)
ClubRight tries the card again every day while the amount is still owed, and stops after 3 failed attempts in a row. On Payments > Debtors, the reason then shows as Failed collection â no retry.
Stripe payments that need the member to confirm with their bank (3D Secure) count as a failure. The member needs to add their card again.
A member with no card saved is never retried automatically. Take the payment another way, for example through the till.
Harlands and DFC
ClubRight doesn't run Harlands or DFC collections, so retries are handled by the bureau. Contact Harlands or DFC directly about their retry process.
