When you create a new membership plan in ClubRight, the first step is choosing a plan type. Each type sets sensible defaults for pricing, duration, and payment collection that you can then customise. Choosing the right type from the start saves time and avoids configuration errors later.
📋 Note: For a step-by-step guide to creating a membership plan, see Creating your first membership plan.
Monthly Rolling
The most common plan type. Members pay a fixed amount each month and can cancel at any time. There is no fixed end date; the membership continues until the member or your team cancels it.
Best for: standard gym memberships where flexibility is important to members.
Typical setup: monthly payment, rolling renewal, payment collected on a fixed day each month.
Monthly Contract
Members pay monthly but are committed to a fixed contract period, for example 12 months. Payments continue each month for the length of the contract. At the end of the contract, the membership can end automatically or roll over into a rolling monthly arrangement.
Best for: gyms that want to lock in member commitment for a set period while spreading payments monthly.
Typical setup: monthly payment, fixed contract length (e.g. 12 months), ends automatically or rolls to monthly rolling at expiry.
Annual Membership
Members pay the full membership fee in a single upfront payment. The membership runs for the contract length (typically 12 months) and then ends automatically. There are no recurring payments.
Best for: members who prefer to pay once and gyms that want to offer an upfront discount.
Typical setup: single payment, 12-month contract, ends automatically. Always set the contract to end automatically; without this, a single payment creates an open-ended membership.
💡 Tip: Set up a renewal window so members can purchase a new plan before their current one expires, without any gap in membership.
Weekly
Members pay weekly on a four-week rolling basis. The membership continues until cancelled, similar to Monthly Rolling but with weekly payment collection.
Best for: gyms that want to offer a lower upfront commitment, or members who prefer weekly budgeting.
Typical setup: weekly payment, rolling, payment collected on the same day each week.
Day Pass
A single visit or day access plan. Members pay once for access on a specific day. There is no recurring payment and no ongoing membership.
Best for: casual visitors, trial sessions, or gyms that want to offer pay-as-you-go access alongside regular memberships.
Typical setup: single payment, one-day contract, ends automatically.
Shared membership
A shared membership allows multiple people to be linked under a single plan, with all payments collected from the lead member's account. This is ClubRight's equivalent of a joint or family membership.
Best for: couples, families, or corporate accounts where multiple people share one membership.
How to set it up: when editing a plan, go to the Availability section and select Shared under Membership Type. A Maximum Members field will appear. Enter the total number of people who can share the membership, including the lead member. For example, set this to 2 for a couple or 4 for a family of four.
Pricing: the plan price should cover all members. For example, if the individual rate is £30 per month, a two-person shared plan should be priced at £60 per month.
Adding shared members: once the lead member has been set up on the shared plan, go to each additional member's profile, open the membership tab, and link them to the lead member's plan.
Removing a shared member: go to the lead member's profile, open the membership plan, click Options, and remove the relevant member from the list.
📋 Note: Shared memberships can be sold online or in club, but linking additional members to the lead must be done manually by staff. Additional members cannot link themselves through the Member Area.
Custom
For anything that doesn't fit the templates above. The Custom type gives you full control over all plan settings without any pre-populated defaults. Use this for unusual payment structures, multi-tier plans, or highly specific access rules.
Best for: experienced ClubRight users who need a configuration not covered by the standard templates.
Which type should I choose?
If you are unsure, start with Monthly Rolling. It suits most gym memberships and is the simplest to set up and manage. Move to Monthly Contract if you want to lock members into a minimum term, or Annual Membership if you want to offer an upfront payment option.
💡 Helpful tip: You can run multiple plan types at the same time. Most gyms offer a rolling monthly plan alongside an annual option, giving members the choice of flexibility or a discounted upfront rate.
