If a member is looking to upgrade membership plans and you would like to charge the difference.
Step 1
Go to the member's profile
Click on the membership plan tab
Edit the current plan
Click options
Cancel the plan
Step 2
Now you will add a new membership plan
Select the new membership plan that the customer would like to upgrade to.

Set up the collection day as immediate. Then change the earliest payment date to when you want to collect the full monthly fee.
To charge the difference you will need to update the payment lines.
The top payment line must be the amount you want to charge right away. You will set the frequency to once.
The bottom payment line will be the fee you want to charge each month moving forward.

Click "Add"
Step 5
Now select a payment method. The plan will turn overdue allowing you to collect the difference in price for upgrading the membership plan.
